At Barney Butter, our almond farmers and suppliers use the most advanced drip and spot irrigation systems (micro-irrigation), which only use as much water as needed per tree. Irrigation is scheduled based on the tree needs, and the soil or weather conditions to maximize the yield and quality of the almond while minimizing negative environmental impacts.
Our primary grower has reduced water waste by 20% through recycling, orchard pruning management, and full utilization of both the Almonds and the Hull (which is a great replacement for alfalfa in livestock feed!).
*The best-known statistic about almonds is that it takes one gallon of water to grow a single almond. Behold! This is true, but only if you consider how much water is required to bring an almond orchard or tree to maturity over a four-year period. Context is key :)
